STONETALES – The cultural initiative

The first edition of STONETALES (Rome, 20th april – 22th may 2016), a cultural program organized by the Department of Engineering of the University “Sapienza” of Rome and LAB2.0, will take place in Rome on the occasion of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. stonetales is a cultural initiative dedicated to the promotion of the italian stone sector and in particular of stones from the Lazio region; an event that aims to give voice to the experts of the field, ambassadors of the quality and beauty of stone products, expression of the millennial relationship that ties Italian stone to the great architecture, art and design of the Country.
STONETALES is a catalogue of stories that find in stone their meeting point; stories of tradition, art, architecture, and design. An opportunity to shed light on the expressive, technical and structural potential of stone, a cultural heritage to rediscover and promote.
On the occasion of the Jubilee the attention is focused on the relationship between the “culture” of stone and the idea of the “sacred” through exhibitions, conferences, and workshops. To do that, STONETALES identifies meeting points between university research, the work of young architects, artists, and designers, and the Catholic Church with the aim of contributing a cultural offer for the believers who will take part in the Jubilee Misericordiae vultus.

Three expositive areas – for art, architecture, and design – will be set up in three spaces from three Roman Chiese Basilicali, with the aim of examining the relationship between space and sacred rituals.

[Meetings and conferences]
Lectures, debates and round tables – organized in the headquarters of the Department of Engineering of the University “Sapienza” of Rome (San Pietro in Vincoli) – will host professors, architects, artists and designers who will debate and explore the expressive, technical, and structural potential of stone.

The International workshop of urban design [Rome city of stone _ places and paths of faith] will call many young students from all of Italy to explore the relationship between architecture, urban space, stone of Rome, and the “sacred” role of the city itself.

[Side events]
Musical and artistic performances, food-tastings and themed aperitivi – hosted in the evocative Chiostro di San Pietro in Vincoli – will accompany the nights of STONETALES, retracing the bond between stone, music, culture and the sacred.
